The Challenge

Montevideo faces an urgent and complex challenge: the sustainable management of its urban waste. With a growing population and limitations in its waste management systems, the city stands at a critical crossroads.

Waste management goes beyond simply collecting and processing garbage; it is deeply linked to quality of life, public health, and the environment—essential dimensions for human well-being.

Waste management in Montevideo is key to improving quality of life and urban sustainability.

During 2022 and 2023, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uruguay collaborated with the Municipality of Montevideo in the implementation of an innovative and systemic approach, with the goal of strengthening institutional capacities for adaptive governance of solid waste in the city.

This approach aimed to enhance institutional capabilities for the effective governance of household solid waste in Montevideo.
